El Mar Que Nos Rodea, which translates to “The Sea Around Us,” is a Chilean summer school curriculum designed to foster a sense of environmental stewardship in the next generation.
As part of Harvard University’s Recupera Chile program, I joined a small team of educators, students, and translators to develop a collection of lesson plans that teach students about climate science, oceanography, marine biology, and the importance of looking after local fish populations. I created a consistent and easy-to-follow format for each lesson plan and compiled them into a playfully illustrated book with a simple yet memorable visual identity.

The Book
For the lesson plan book, the key to success was simplicity and clarity. I designed it with a grade-school teacher in mind, opting for a page layout that highlights, rather than distracts from, the lesson plan: no fuss and no unnecessary elements.
The books will be distributed as physical copies and PDFs in Spring 2021. The PDF format includes links to relevant educational materials and worksheets that can be printed and distributed in classrooms.
Logo
The 2010 Chilean earthquake and subsequent tsunamis destroyed coastal communities. El Mar Que Nos Rodea was started in response. The idea was to teach children that the sea wasn’t just a source of destruction, but something to be cared for and celebrated. I designed the logo, a child-like drawing of waves that also reads as a smiley face, to represent this aim.
The wordmark is also presented on a wave to give it a sense of playfulness, a visual treatment that is repeated throughout the book.
